On Friday, November 1, 2013 the PHCC will hold their Fall Golf Tournament for affiliate members and plumbers in San Diego, CA at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. The tournament theme, “Plumbers Helping Plumbers,” means exactly that. The PHCC members, affiliate members and guests will be supporting one of their own with their tournament entry fees. A portion of this year’s event goes to Robbie Sandoval and his family as their 2-year old son battles Tay-Sachs Disorder. Tina Howe, supporter of her industry peers, is working hard to bring in new members and golfers to help make this event truly meaningful for the Sandoval family.
Tay-Sachs disease is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder and causes progressive deterioration of nerve cells and is often fatal. Robbie & Lorelei Sandoval’s son, Isaac Makana, whose name means Gift and Laughter, was born the day before Thanksgiving in 2010. Developing normally and full of life and laughter, a small eye wiggle sent the family to an ophthalmologist where he was diagnosed with the fatal disorder. The family left their home and their jobs in San Diego to move to North Carolina where he would receive cord blood transplant at Duke University. He went through intense chemotherapy and in October 2011 received his new immune system.
Isaac suffered complications and remained hospitalized for six months. After being released, the future has been uncertain for the Sandoval’s, but one thing has remained, hope and an immense spirit in Isaac as he has surpassed many expectations. The family continues to work with physical therapists and treat him at home with love and support. “The future is not promised and Isaac is very loved,” said Isaac’s father, Robbie Sandoval, who worked with many of the plumbers in San Diego, CA as a member of the PHCC. “We continue fighting every day for every day.”
“Isaac’s spirit and the love of his family is inspiring and exemplifies the strength we have when we join together,” said Tina Howe, President of the PHCC, San Diego Chapter. “We are proud to offer hope, love and support and whatever resources we can to help Isaac and the Sandoval family.”
In October, Tina Howe has made plans to open a training course in San Diego, HVAC specific, to compliment the heavily focused training and education in plumbing that is at the heart of the PHCC.
