The Bill Howe Family of Companies First Coed Softball Team Plays First Game
Local San Diego plumber, HVAC techs & water damage specialists, a.k.a. “The Bad News Bills,” played their first official game at Presidio Park
May 6, 2015 San Diego, Calif. – Bill Howe Family of Companies, one of San Diego’s largest family-owned businesses, has been offering expert services for 35 years. Beginning as a way to offer affordable San Diego plumbers in the local communities, the company has since grown with two new divisions in heating & air conditioning and restoration & flood services creating a one-stop shop for business owners and residents’ home care needs. Part of their success has been a consistent focus on creating a culture of healthy, happy employees within the company to retain quality people who in turn deliver quality service to customers.
Seeing a need to create a healthier company culture, in 2012, the San Diego plumbing company hired professional wellness coaches, BARR Corporate Health, and instituted a full wellness program. As part of the program model, on site fitness courses, nutritional education seminars and full biometrics were offered company wide. The wellness program gained momentum in the last three years and in 2015, a group of dedicated San Diego plumbers, HVAC techs and restoration specialists were calling for their very own sports team to represent the efforts of Bill Howe wellness.
In January, The Bill Howe wellness committee released an official survey to determine interest in hosting a sports team within the San Diego plumbing, air conditioning and restoration company. The survey asked for participation interest, possible sports people would like to play, and availability for interested parties. “Our repose rate was overwhelming,” says senior committee member and Human Resources Manager, Amber Baynard. “We weren’t sure what to expect and the level of interest we received was pretty amazing. I think it shows our efforts in promoting healthy active lifestyles are working.”
The most requested sport was softball and by February, the “Bad News Bills” were officially banded. Although more than 35 people signed on to play, the company decided on creating only one team for the inaugural team. “Due to hectic family commitments and a demanding work schedule, we didn’t want anyone to feel pressured by another commitment outside of work,” said Tina Howe, Vice President of the Bill Howe Family of Companies and the Bills’ team mom. “We want this to be fun for everyone, and so we have a pretty big team to field every Tuesday. But, it keeps it stress free and balanced. We all want to cheer each other on and just play and do our best.”
The Bad News Bills played their first game on Cinco de Mayo at Presidio Park in Old Town. The season began with a loss, but Captain, Rick Cervantes says, “We’re just getting started. We know how to win and everyone is committed to making it a great season.” Games will be held every Tuesday night between 6-9 PM through Vavi Social Sports. The general public is welcome and encouraged to come and cheer on the Bad News Bills.
