DIY Tankless Descale
Our San Diego Journeyman Plumber, Tris Coffin, walks through the easy process to descale your tankless water heater in San Diego. It will take about an hour total, and you only needf a few supplies on hand for a simple solution to keeping your tankless water heater in optimal condition.
Supplies you will need:
2 Gallons of water
5 gallon Bucket
2 Washing Machine Hoses
Descale solution
Small pump
Before you begin, ensure that your tankless water heater is not more than 5 years old, or has been maintained each year. If it is an older unit and has not been maintained, descaling could cause more problems.
Step One (Prep the tankless for the descale)
Shut off the hot and cold valves
Place hoses on the hot and cold hose bibs (isolation valves).
Put pump in the bucket and place cold side hose on pump and leave the hot side hose inside of the bucket
Step Two (Run the descale)
Fill the bucket with 2 gallons of water and add in the descale solution
Shut off the gas, but leave unit plugged in and on
Plug in the pump
Run the pump for 30 minutes
Step Three (Finish & Test)
Once the pump has run for 30 minutes, shut off and shut down the cold side hose bib
Turn on the cold water valve and flush into the bucket
Shut off the hot hose bib and open hot outlet valve
Test the tankless by turning on the hot water at any fixture in the house. Let it run for just a few minutes. Tip: Use a bucket or pitcher to catch the water and use it to water plants!
