Well-Liked Plumber Returns to Work After Suffering Serious Brain Injury Saving Four-year Old Daughter In Car Accident

July 23, 2013, 2013 San Diego, Calif. – Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. is one of the largest family-owned and operated service and repair companies in San Diego. Marcus Jackson was a part of that success as one of the San Diego plumbers working at Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc., but was struck with tragedy on December 8, 2011. Coming home for dinner, Marcus and his excited four-year old daughter were exiting his vehicle when she ran out as a car headed towards her. He did not think about his safety, his pregnant wife or the consequences when he grabbed his daughter, shouted for the car to stop and prayed. His brave act shielded her from the worst of the damage. She suffered a broken jaw and leg, but his bravery saved her life. Marcus suffered multiple breaks and spent four months in the hospital, three weeks of that in an induced coma in the attempt to relieve the pressure due to his brain trauma. He awoke in January with little memory of where he was and how he got there.

The company took care of him like family. The employees got together and chipped in giving his pregnant wife and daughter a true Christmas with presents, dinner and even a fully decorated tree. During his stay in the hospital, the staff commented on how popular he was. There was someone from Bill Howe Plumbing there every day to visit prompting them to declare him one of the most popular patients they have had. He is liked by everyone and is “always positive and smiling” says the Operations Manager. Bill Howe Plumbing also continued to pay full benefits for an additional six months to help ease the burden on his wife and family while he was recovering.

After leaving the hospital, the San Diego plumber’s return to work was not likely. He spent five days a week in physical therapy including therapy for brain injury survivors. “As much as I’ve been through, I’m blessed,” said Marcus Jackson upon his return to work this month. “It was hard dealing with losing out on everything, but I was told to say my goodbyes and here I am. Tina [Howe] was so supportive too. She encouraged me to work out and get strong so I could come back to work. I began swimming and lifting weights as part of my therapy and I am slowly getting back to where I was. I’m blessed by God and the people that helped to motivate me.”

Marcus is one of thousands suffering from brain injury in San Diego. It was unlikely that he would be able to work in the labor-intensive position at Bill Howe Plumbing again, but he credits the support and help from them as part of his recovery success.

“We were all very saddened by Marcus’s tragedy,” said Tina Howe, Vice President of Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. “He is loved among his peers and customers and many have already begun to learn of his return and request him for service. But, most importantly, he is part of our family and that means a great deal to us. We are so proud of his accomplishments in recovery and are happy to have him back with the team.”
