Bill Howe Family of Companies Named 2013 National Contractor of the Year

Contractor Magazine names local San Diego plumbing company its 2013 National Contractor of the Year 

December 26, 2013 San Diego, Calif. – San Diego plumber, Bill Howe, opened his well-known service and repair company in 1980. Since then, it has grown into the Bill Howe Family of Companies employing over 130 people across three divisions including the two newest services in: heating & air conditioning and restoration & flood services. The success of the San Diego plumbing company has been largely based on their three-tiered mission of a commitment to employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction and community involvement.

Contractor Magazine has been the news magazine of mechanical contracting since 1954. They are a member of Penton Media’s Mechanical Systems Construction Group and concentrate on the exclusive coverage of plumbing, heating, hydronic/radiant heating, fire protection and mechanical piping systems.  After choosing the San Diego plumber as the honored recipient of National Contractor, Editorial Director, Bob Mader flew from Chicago to spend a few days with Bill and Tina Howe at the San Diego office to experience the Bill Howe machine before releasing his online article, “At Contractor of the Year Bill Howe Plumbing, They Know Howe.”

The Bill Howe Family of Companies has been the recipient of many local awards, as well as another National Contractor award in 2011, presented by the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractor’s National Association and Delta Faucet Company. The San Diego plumber values education and training within the industry, as evidenced by the amount of Bill Howe employees enrolled in the PHCC 4-year Journeyman Apprenticeship Program and newly opened HVACR training school. The company pays for 100 percent tuition, materials and books not covered by the many scholarships the employees have earned outside of the company. They also care for the health and wellbeing of their employees and have a full wellness program offered to all employees and their family members to focus on health and longevity in the labor-intensive work of the plumbing and heating trade.

In the community, the Bill Howe Family of Companies has unmatched generosity and regularly donates to organizations such as the American Heart Association, the San Diego Burn Institute, employee sponsored endeavors, the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station and continual pro bono plumbing work for those in need. During Mader’s visit, the company was hosting a gourmet appreciation lunch for customers while raising toys for the USMC “Toys for Tots.”

But the value in the Local plumbing company can be seen best in its dedication to customer service. “The only way to gain trust is to make it right with the customer,” said Tina Howe, Vice President of the Bill Howe Family of Companies. “Our customers are as much a part of our family as our employees and without them, we would not be the company of success stories we are today.”

We had other companies come out for estimates on what was considered a major job with jackhammers and replacing cast iron pipes under the house… having been stung before, we wanted another estimate just to make sure we were making an informed decision. The prior estimates went up to $21,000!
Bill Howe sent us an amazing veteran plumber, Dashawn and his co- worker Anthony. Dashawn did a thorough check of the problem, explained what he thought was needed … he did a final check and we were able to see for ourselves what was the problem. He recommended a complete cleaning to de-scale the pipes, and not the major work we dreaded. Thanks to his solid analysis and patience in making sure we saw what he saw, the issue was resolved completely, and saved us thousands of unnecessary work. None of the other estimates included the cleaning; only the major repairs. Thanks to Dashawn’s knowledge, professionalism and honesty, we’re Bill Howe customers.

This was our second excellent experience with Bill Howe. We had a blocked kitchen sink drain 8/5. I was able to get a same day appointment which is AMAZING. Person on phone was very courteous and set me up right away. Tony arrived at the house (called me 30 minutes out so I was able to be ready). He diagnosed the issue (blocked drain, not the garbage compactor) and was able to snake it and ran the water for 10 minutes to be sure the drains were clear. He cleaned up everything and you would not have known he was even there. Thank-you Tony and Bill Howe, you always know how.
