Ask the Experts: Miguel Sanchez and Duct Cleaning!

Our HVAC Division Manager Explains the Importance of Duct Cleaning

Miguel Sanchez Bill Howe Heating & Air Conditioning Manager

Q: What exactly is a ducting system? What components are involved?

A: Duct cleaning is the process in which dust and/or debris, along with other allergens and particles, are cleaned/removed from the inside of your home’s or business’s HVAC air ducts.

Q: Does every HVAC system have ductwork?

A: No, there are different types of heating and/or cooling systems for both homes and business.

Examples: Wall heaters, floor heaters, radiant electric heating, radiant hydronic heating, Ductless mini splits, and PTAC units (window/wall type). All these types of systems do not use air ducts; an easy way to find out if your home has air ducts would be to look for multiple supply registers on the floor, walls, or ceilings, this means you have forced air  heating and/or air conditioning with air ducts.

Q:  How often do you recommend cleaning the ducting system?

A: Air ducts should be cleaned every 2-3 years, sooner if you or anyone in your home or business has allergies, asthma or pets. Indoor contaminants may include: dust mites, tobacco smoke, household mold, chemicals, airborne allergens, bacteria, animal dander and carbon monoxide. These contaminants are then circulated throughout your home or office and affect the health and comfort of you, your family, or your employees.

Q: Is there a better time of year to clean ductwork?

A: Yes. The best times of the year are before the heating and cooling seasons begin, such as fall between September & October before you start your heater for the season. And, during spring between March & May before you start your A/C unit for the summer season.

Q: What are the benefits of duct cleaning?

A: The benefits of duct cleaning are that you will be breathing cleaner fresher air, which will help with allergies and/or asthma, less dust on your furniture and linens, extending the life of your HVAC equipment and it makes your system work more efficiently.

Q: Does regular maintenance and cleaning save on energy costs?

A: Yes! A clean well-maintained HVAC system & duct work will work smoother, quieter, and can improve efficiency by up to 21%.

Q: Are there safety hazards involved with not cleaning the duct work?

A: Yes. According to the EPA, indoor air is found to be up to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. Air duct cleaning can remove airborne contaminants such as bacteria, fungus, mold spores, pet dander and pollen which may help to alleviate allergy and asthma symptoms.

Q: What does the process involve? Is it different in homes versus condominiums or commercial buildings?

A: Different contractors use different equipment and different cleaning methods. BHP uses a push/pull and scrub method. The way this works is we use a rotating bristle brush which scrubs the inner walls of your air ducts, while simultaneously using compressed air to push all debris forward. A Hepa-filtered, high powered commercial vacuum is then used on the opposite end to pick up all the loose debris. All registers are removed from the wall, floor or ceiling and the rotating brush is inserted through each supply box to ensure all ducts are properly scrubbed.

Q: How long does it take to properly clean ducting?

A: This whole process takes up to 4-6 hours to complete for a single system, which includes either replacing the air filter(s) or cleaning them if you have an electronic air cleaner or electrostatic air filter, and we also test run your HVAC system. Larger homes and or homes and business with multiple systems will require additional time.

Q: Can anyone clean ducting, or do you have to have specialized training?

A: Yes, with the right equipment and expertise, but you should always hire a professional to do it right and guarantee the system has been properly cleaned.

Q: How much does it cost to have your ducting cleaned?

A: This depends on the size of your HVAC system, BHP charges $550.00 for up to 10-registers supply/return, and $45.00 for each additional register. Our work comes with a 90-day warranty; if you are not satisfied, we’ll come back and re-clean your air ducts. For your place of business pricing can vary; call 1-800-BILL-HOWE to schedule a free  on-site estimate.

Q: Does Bill Howe offer any maintenance programs for just cleaning the ductwork?

A: Yes, again this depends on the size of your HVAC system. With a home visit by one of our HVAC experts, we can create a duct cleaning maintenance program catered to your needs.

Melissa Taylor of Bill Howe Heating & Air Follows in Generous Footsteps of Bill and Tina Howe

San Diego HVAC Employee Begins Giving Initiative Early to Send Soldiers Home for the Holidays

Melissa Taylor of Bill Howe Plumbing

April 5, 2013 San Diego, Calif. – Bill Howe Plumbing continues to encourage “paying-it-forward” spirit in all employees and plumbers in San Diego, CA. The company started with one man and one truck over 30 years ago and has grown into the Bill Howe Family of Companies serving most of San Diego HVAC, restoration and flood services and all plumbing. Bill and Tina Howe have retained the quality and trust of a small family-owned and operated business, focused on giving back to the community, without sacrificing service.

In addition to a never-ending dedication to local community outreach, Bill and Tina Howe are adding the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station to a long list of organizations they wish to help. The Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station, together with freedom station, has a mission of helping transitioning soldiers; Military Heroes in transition that have returned home injured and/or disabled. The organization is near to Bill Howe employee, Melissa Taylor. She has a long history supporting men and women in the military; many members of her family are in the military including one of her sons serving in the United States Marine Corp, and her father who is retired from the USMC.

While the government helps to care for them medically, there is a sometimes a gap in the holistic care they need. Melissa’s response speaks to this need; reuniting them with friends and family during a time of the year that can prove so lonesome in the best of circumstances. “So far we have raised over $800 for the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station,” said Melissa Taylor of the San Diego HVAC company, Bill Howe Heating & Air Conditioning. “In just two short weeks, everyone has proved they care and want to help. We have even raised our original goal amount and expect to exceed it with no trouble, we can’t wait to present, not just a check, but a thank you to as many military men and women as we can for the sacrifice they have made.”

The original goal for Melissa’s fundraising initiative is set at $2000; however, in the first week, through the generosity of all the company’s plumbers in San Diego, CA, she has raised over $125.00 plus an anonymous donation from one of Bill Howe’s customers. Melissa expects to exceed the original goal amount and make a difference in many soldier’s lives. “This is all so exciting, and I thank you, Melissa and Bill Howe Plumbing from the bottom of my heart for coming on board and being a part of this journey,” said Judy Sexton, on the Board of Directors for Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station, “We will never let you go.”

The Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station seeks to support our “warriors” in a number of ways to improve quality of life and ease the transition from military service to civilian life. They assist in four main groups: seriously injured just returning home; those suffering post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury; those undergoing physical therapy, and warriors who have been medically retired and remain in our community. Their mission is to be “a hand up, not a hand out.” The service they offer for transitioning military is paramount as they leave service, often wounded, and begin to rebuild a life in a culture so different from the climate in which they sacrificed for their country.

“The men and women in our military have made so many sacrifices for our benefit and helping them is the least we can do,” said Tina Howe, Vice President of the Bill Howe Family of Companies. “I am so proud that we have cultivated a company full of caring individuals who want to spread the giving spirit; it is very exciting what we can all do together.”

Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. Sponsors Spring Harp Fest for the Fourth Year

Community Outreach is Second Nature to Local San Diego Heating and Air, Restoration and Flood, and Plumbing Company

Bill Howe Plumbing's own Tom Safreed introducing Harp Fest 2013

March 22, 2013 San Diego, Calif. – Bill Howe Plumbing has been a proud sponsor of a multitude of different organizations in San Diego, from a three-year campaign with the American Heart Association to multiple partnering opportunities with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. Heating and air, and plumbing may be their expertise in business, but community outreach and philanthropy is something at which Bill Howe Plumbing excels.

This year’s Spring Harp Fest is the fourteenth annual celebration of getting harmonicas in the hands of students and bringing music back to education. The event was founded in 1999, draws some of Southern California’s most prominent blues harmonica players, and is 100 percent free. It is funded in its entirety by charitable contributions from the local community, donations from attendees, raffles at the event and local business support. This year, Hooters and HoDads will be donating food for purchase and families are encouraged to come all together to enjoy a quality and fun, music-filled time.

Bill Howe became involved with Spring Harp Fest four years ago because their senior field supervisor, Ton Safreed,is an accomplished harmonica student involved with the organization. Tom and the Bill Howe Band, a group of musically inclined technicians, have even performed at many of the events the Bill Howe Family of Companies host each year for the whole company. Tom has been with Bill Howe Plumbing for almost 20 years and is a skilled plumber. San Diego residents have many choices in where to go for fun, but this event offers so much more in terms of the good they are doing in the community.

In addition to sponsoring Spring Harp Fest, the San Diego heating and air company has also promoted many events for individual plumbers and their families surrounding music and the arts. In June 2012, Bill Howe Plumbing generously hosted a “Reggae to the Rescue” event at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach to raise money for one of their own, Doug Powell’s son, Andy. The benefit helped to raise enough money for Andy’s life saving kidney transplant. Doug has been part of the Bill Howe family for over 19 years and is also a skilled journeyman plumber. San Diego is home to a thriving music scene and Bill and Tina know how important it is to support not only music in education, but their own employees as well.

“We are a company built on giving back,” said Tina Howe, Vice President of Bill Howe Family of Companies.” “It is especially rewarding when we can take care of our own employees; they are our biggest asset and giving back always starts at home.”
